The Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is a very easy to grow and versatile large bush/ small tree. They will produce delicate white flowers that become tiny black berries with an abundance of juice. Said to be excellent for a wide range of medicinal purposes, these berries are high in antioxidants and can be called a ‘superfood’. Elderberries can be used fresh, dried, juiced or cooked. These plants can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, although will not tolerate drought terribly well.
