French Echallions are similar to Shallots but are much easier to use as they grow to a larger size, but their mild and sweet flavour similar to a Brown Onion means they are a very versatile onion for the home gardener. Ensure soil is fertile and well drained. Plant in a sunny position anytime from April to July about 15-20cm apart in rows 45-60cm apart. Bulbs need to be planted so the neck of the bulb is at soil level. Side dress with fertiliser in spring once rapid growth begins. Keep beds weed free whilst plants are growing as the more green growth above the soil the larger the bulbs will end up. Ensure adequate water is available during the growing period, but withhold water for the final few weeks before harvesting to ensure plants become dry and firm before lifting. Once foliage has died back (around Christmas time), bulbs can be lifted and stored.
